Here's the Barbies of my youth

The first Barbie I ever had was a vintage Midge. I didn't know where she had come from, and I wasn't positive that she was mine. She would have been my favorite, since she was a blue-eyed brunette like me.

When they were first going to get me a Barbie as a gift, I wanted one very like that Midge, only my own. I told them I didn't want a blonde and I didn't want her to be smiling with teeth.

So they bought the 1977 Superstar Barbie.

That's the beauty of these prescribed celebrations that include mandatory gifting.
If they can't find the gift I wanted, but they feel they HAVE TO buy something, they buy the very thing I said I didn't want, bring it home, wrap it, and gift it to me while watching with critical expectation. Any reaction other than delight gets charged with "rudeness" and "spoiled little brat!"
The kids are supposed to get with the program and pretend to be delighted with the very thing they were dreading you were going to bring home and asked you NOT to.
So, they ASK us what we want - then sentence us to NOT get that thing (because the money's already been spent on THIS and the occasion is over) - and expect us to act happy.
Where to even begin.

Okay. Yes. She's pretty. Prettier than I am. There she is, on the left, in her original dress.

On the right is Pink and Pretty Barbie, IIRC.

Middle is Hispanic Barbie. I didn't know the implications in 1980. I had always loved Wonder Woman's black hair and blue eyes, so this was a way of getting at least part of the formula.

It wasn't until 1992 that I found a Western Stampin' Tara Lynn with black hair and blue eyes, and of course bought her instantly, for my then-baby daughter to grow into. She became well loved and I have no idea where she ended up. Here's a pic from the internet.

That one's even more like me, with the dilated eyes! People always remarked on my eyes, from my earliest days, and when I was a teenager, asked if I was on drugs. Nope. It's just neurodiversity.

Okay. Here's Golden Dream in her original swimsuit.

The white top and pink skirt, I vaguely remember came with a Miss Flair clone. They were kinda small and barely fit on Barbie.

The white and black dress I think was Mattel and it was so difficult to get on!

The blue handkerchief hem dress was made by my sister. She and Mother made me one each, about the same time. Mother's was a white strapless peasant wedding dress with crystal sequin trim, but it came apart.

That pink dress came with the old Midge doll.

On the right is a Mattel dress.

The crochet pieces were original little me.

The shiny skirt and top in the center were from Ms Flair, too, I believe. They're modeled on a Starr doll because she was the only one that fit into them.

I made that black vest from a piece of fake leather from a discarded purse.

The white peasant eyelet dress and crochet jumper were from a gift shop in some small town in Eastern WA back in the early 80s.

Green dress, Mattel vintage.

Starr doll original outfit.

Beauty Secrets Barbie, part of her original gear.

Red and blue 60s Mattel dress with the trim added to cover up some damaged places.

The red and blue paisley folkish looking thing was Mattel 80s.
Totally don't remember where the dotted dress came from, or the red too-sheer one.
Spanish Barbie's original outfit, which was another reason I wanted her - to get that strikingly Germanic dress!

The black shawl came with Spanish Barbie. The blue and white, and red and white, wide-brim hats were from a clone four-pack. Green crochet swimsuit and the red crochet cap just beneath it came from that same E. WA gift shop. Neither fit very well, but they were still cool.

On the right is a pink sock that I cut and hemmed, and tacked black lace over. It actually looked pretty cool when it was on a doll.

The red and blue tutu skirt and and the tan and yellow skirt were crocheted by little me using worsted yarn. Pink swimsuit (negligee? onesie?) came with Beauty Secrets and should have been on her in the photo above. And that yellow braid is hers. The grey blob in center left was my attempt at a revolution era mob cap.

Here's rather a mess that includes some small dollhouse sized appliances I found at a craft shop and was tickled with. There's a tiny clear plastic box with tiny printed fairy tale books with real pages and extremely short stories.

Notice the white boot and the tall brown boot. One of the white boots (an off brand) had split. The mate of the brown boot had been missing for a long time, but I still liked them so much I kept the one as a souvenir. (I'm descended from a daddy who had a little box in his desk with pens that didn't work any more but had been really cool back when they worked.)

There's the card that came on the package of Ken's Blue Chip Dressing suit. I had 1981 Western Ken with the white and black outfit, and horses Dallas and Midnight. Baby girls ended up with the horses. I don't remember where Ken went, but he survived long enough for me to record in the diary that I heard a yell - "Mom! Come quick! The boys are hitting each other with a Ken doll and a hammer!"
That struck me as so funny that I laughed all the way to save them.

Center bottom white and yellow floppy hat is all that's left to show I ever had a Pretty Changes Barbie.

The child's finger is pointing at the only Superstar Barbie shoe left.

The yellow ones might've been from Pretty Changes, too.

Curvy Barbie Progress!

That Curvy Barbie pattern that I'm "famous" for-- well, only a year and a half late, here it is!

There, isn't that cute??

Check out Miss Blue's hairstyle!  I had to do something, couldn't fit dresses on her with all that hair down her back.
I tried to hold her between my knees and wrestle with her hair, tried a dozen and some times, could not get the hair and the bit of lace to cooperate, started to get frustrated...  finally I ran upstairs to get somebody to help me, then held the doll between my knees and wrapped the hair around to demonstrate what I wanted to happen, and it went just right!
The hair ended up where it was supposed to go and I stuck the pins in it, and it was elegant and secure, while my would-be helper stood there watching.
Well-- "Thank you!!"

The New Curvy Barbie, and Newsweek Interview

Well, wasn't that a fun surprise!  A request for an interview by a Newsweek reporter!

It made me feel famous! Hehe, although it didn't get me any fame-- my page views are the same or actually a little less than average since the article came out  :-)

Whatever else, it was a fun way to shake up a morning.  One minute I had dropped off the kids to school, was sitting down with my breakfast and to-do list, and of course sparing a moment to indulge in re-examination of my pain and familiar dilemmas, with some self-doubt and ennui.  Next thing you know the phone's ringing.
I only had time enough to say, God, don't let me say something stupid!
And then I was chattering all kinds of cheerful, positive and enthusiastic opinions about my almost-forgotten hobby, from the almost-forgotten old days.

Here's the article:
http://www.newsweek.com/new-barbie-dolls-what-will-they-wear-421358

After the interview, I was kinda wound up, and on a whim I jumped in the car and zoomed down to Walmart to get one of the new dolls.  Only a few minutes' thought or one minute's research would have told me it'll be a long time before the new body dolls hit the big box store! Oh, well, there were plenty of other things on my shopping list, it wasn't a wasted trip  :-)

The new Curvy dolls can be pre-ordered here:  http://www.barbie.com/en-us#curvy
And I did so as soon as I got home.
Went with this one:

Not only because she was only ten bucks.
I love the hair.  Remember what I said about the purple-hair girl?

Blue hair makes me think Space Princess, possibly another of Captain Kirk's girlfriends.

It probably would have been this one if not for the bent arm, obviously-dyed hair (I see that blue hair as natural, just not from this planet) and the fact that her face reminds me of someone I know.
And she was $20.  Yes I am that tightfisted.  I'm only allowing myself to *buy* a doll because she'll further the hobby, which does at least pay for itself  :-)

I'm set up to make some clothes, now.
In this apartment, I have a bedroom all to myself-- a little 10x12 square all my own that I love and am so grateful for!  It's not that there's ROOM for a sewing table, it's kinda sitting in the middle and I go around it to go to bed!

I gotta do something with that website.
People still write me occasionally, still send me thank you notes and pictures of what they've made with my patterns, but I've fallen behind the curve.  It's time to get those photos up, fix some errors I know about, make some long-overdue improvements, even add some NEW CONTENT.

I got a notifier yesterday saying Miss Blue has been shipped.
I can't wait! I'm gonna get a wardrobe together for her lickety-split, post the patterns and sell the prototypes.  Yay!

Hey-- did you notice what just happened?
I just admitted that I bought a Barbie doll because I wanted it.
When my early teens turned into my late teens I got self-conscious about my Barbie collection and packed it away, but with so much regret!
Then, I was an outsider, exiled from the pink aisle.
I was so glad once my baby girl was big enough to look around and reach for things, so I could carry that baby girl into the pink aisle!  She was my ticket, my passport back into the world of Barbie!

The girls are now 17, 21 and 23 years old, but I'm 45 -- I could wear a red hat if I wanted to, but I don't!  But I'm plenty old and bold enough to admit I'm buying a plastic doll because I jolly well want to!

New Barbie Pattern: One-Shoulder Dress

A lady wrote to request an off-the-shoulder pattern.  I only glanced at the email and got a great idea how to do that!  And produced this!
No, no, she said "off the shoulder"  :-)

I guess it was time for me to make Barbie a One-Shoulder Dress, that's all.

Pattern coming soon to the website!

Barbie-one-shoulder-3

This is one of my favorite Barbie dolls.  I found her in the FREE box at the thrift shop.  What, nobody wanted her just because she's purple and sparkly??  And that makes me love her!  I love things that are different and flawed, yet uniquely beautiful  :-)

She should have had wings, but they're gone.  Poor wounded fairy!  The least I can do is make her a pretty dress.

I changed the white balance so this picture wouldn't come out all yellow (from the desk lamp) and inadvertently made her look pink.  She's really very purple.

There, I just took her to several different locations in my house and outside, and my poor little cam couldn't get a decent shot of her.   So I swiped a couple photos from ebay auctions...

THIS is how purple she is.

Barbie Modelmuse Pattern Progress

I love this picture. So dramatic.
Here's the progress on the next strapless Barbie bodice pattern!

ModelMuse Barbie - it begins!

Someone wrote me with feedback on my free Barbie strapless pattern and asked if or when I was going to make any patterns from the Barbie Modelmuse body shape.  I had not up to that point even heard of the new body.
I went looking on ebay and found a Modelmuse shape doll for a total of $8 which is just about my right price range.

The new shape really is lovely!  It looks much more graceful and realistic than any they've come out with before.
Rather than post nudie shots here's the full length view

Those are the shots the ebay seller provided.  The dollie's lying on my ironing board right now being inspirational, and I'm totally going to make some free patterns for her, but so far she hasn't moved for like two weeks and I haven't even taken pictures of her myself.  Sigh...

Barbie "Be a Real Fashion Designer"

I had a $20 coupon from Mattel. What to spend it on? Well, it would have to be something that we would never buy otherwise!
So Andrea got this kit. I never would have spent money on this. It was kinda fun though. We had a good time decorating. You get five simple dresses and a bunch of stickers and glitter to put on them. It's a good concept. My biggest complaint would be that the dresses aren't very well made-- photo of back of the purple dress is to prove that-- if I made a dress that came out like that I'd call it a do-over!
I'm going to make a few more simple Barbie dresses so she can use up the rest of the stuff that came in the kit. That's the plan anyway, don't hold your breath for it happening :-)

PS, forgot to mention how I got a $20 coupon from Mattel! I bought Apples to Apples for Christmas, and the bottommost card in one of the decks looked like it had been through a machine. I sent it to them and asked for a new one (it was the "chocolate bonbons" card or I wouldn't have bothered) and they sent me the coupon instead.
Hmph.

My free Barbie pattern: Mailbag bonanza!

I love it when people send me pictures of what they've made with my patterns!

Kristi writes:

I’ve been sewing like crazy the last week to make a nice big supply of dresses for my daughter’s Christmas present. I wanted to share again. And I’ve made even MORE since I took this picture and added more ribbons and sparkles to some of the dresses here. I’ve also come up with a simple lazy way to make sleeves that are seen on some of these dresses. You can see it on the plaid Christmas dress. I basically sew a tube of fabric and pin it into the bodice before I sew it together. I’m going to try to add long sleeves next! Thanks again for the fun pattern. I think I am having more fun than my daughter!
And look at the wonderful pictures she sent me!

Superstar Barbie

Just what I needed! Another Barbie! I didn't have enough before this!
Hey, seriously, she was only three dollars...
